Scientists develop a vaccine against leishmaniosis - 20/03/2009

The scientific community is in luck, since a group of researchers extremeños has developed a vaccine that could save the lives of many dogs as it could end one of the most dangerous canine diseases, leishmaniasis, a disease that spreads xx through mosquito and is most prevalent in the Mediterranean area. These scientists are currently working on the last phase of this important project and it is anticipated that the vaccine could soon be available in the market.

It is a scientific breakthrough of paramount importance, primarily because it would address a very serious disease that often causes death in affected dogs. You can also have a positive impact to humans, since in some cases it is also affected. Until now no vaccine against this disease. In the laboratories responsible for this project has been working on addressing the Leishmania (protozoa responsible for the disease) before it reaches the cells of the dog up and started to destroy them. Hopefully the last phase of this project will bear fruit soon and that there is an effective treatment to combat this terrible disease.
