Staff veterinarian who has lost everything in the wildfires that have ravaged the southeast of Australia, are working in the Healesville Sanctuary to save the lives of hundreds of animals that were surprised by the flames.
In recent days, this animal conservation center has been overwhelmed by the number of copies that have arrived. Australian authorities estimate that approximately one million animals have died in fires.
The staff of the Center for Animals and Plants of Australia has moved to Healesville to assist in the care of animals that are coming, including opossums, koalas and all sorts of birds. Sanctuary spokeswoman, Judy Robertson, explained that some animals had to be slaughtered, while others face-month rehabilitation.
Among the animals that are recovered in the center of the state of Victoria, located one hour from Melbourne, is the famous koala who was rescued by a firefighter in a forest fire. The copy, which turned out to be female and to have the name 'Sam', is being hydrated, and veterinarians have healed from burns he suffered in the legs.
Robertson noted that the staff also have to face their own losses. "Unfortunately we have staff who have lost their home and have a lot of people affected by the loss of friends and relatives and their homes," he said.
Furthermore, Robertson has argued that, despite all the copies that are already in the center, awaiting the arrival of many more animals.
